Homecoming at Fremont High is a week filled with fun themes and activities, ending with the football game and dance. But behind the excitement lies meticulous planning.
“It is my second year working with Student Council. Last April or May, we started working with administration on dates,” Student Council sponsor Ashley Bignell said. “We work on getting Spirit Week activities and potential themes approved.”
The preparation involves more than securing themes and activities — it also includes coordinating behind-the-scenes efforts that often go unnoticed by most students.
Student Council plays a big role in boosting school spirit and giving back to the community, and Spirit Week is one way to do that. Homecoming is a time for staff and students to participate in school traditions, try new things and have fun. Behind the scenes, there are countless emails, meetings, shopping trips and supply orders — tedious but important tasks.
“I have to give credit to Mr. Anderson, Mr. Schleicher, and Mr. McClain,” Bignell said. “They’re my go-to for Homecoming help.”
As Spirit Week approaches, stress starts to build. Students are busy finding dates, planning outfits and joining activities, but the behind-the-scenes work is often underestimated. Daily tasks such as judging door decorations, organizing attire contests, practicing for the pep rally and decorating take significant time and attention to detail.
“I’m a perfectionist and believe if you’re going to do something, do it well,” Bignell said.
Still, many students don’t participate in Spirit Week themes, activities or even the dance itself — missing out on an experience unique to high school. Those who do, however, have a great time.
“It was so much fun,” freshman Mallory Meyer said. “My friends and I couldn’t stop talking about it!”
The satisfaction of a smoothly run Spirit Week washes over staff and students after the football game and post-dance cleanup. Before long, spring will bloom — and prom will be here once again.
Bignell and the Student Council members said they feel a sense of accomplishment after pulling off a well-organized Spirit Week, pep rally and dance.
