Fremont Public Schools is implementing a new security system across the district, including updated technology designed to improve emergency response in schools.
Schools that have already received updates include Johnson Crossing Academic Center, Fremont Middle School and Fremont High School.
One of the most significant additions is a small emergency fob issued to administration. In an emergency, administration can press and hold the fob to alert authorities.
The system also includes blue lights installed throughout school buildings that activate during a lockdown.
“I chose blue lights for the lockdown drill because I wanted something that would clearly and immediately differentiate from the white lights used in the fire alarm system,” Kavan said. “The goal was to eliminate any confusion between a fire evacuation and a lockdown situation. By using a distinct color, staff and students can quickly recognize the type of emergency and respond appropriately without hesitation.”
Students in the district already participate in a variety of safety drills, including fire drills, lockdown drills, bus evacuation drills and, in rare cases, tornado drills. Schools are required to complete a certain number of drills each year.
Kavan, the district’s security coordinator, has led safety improvements in Fremont Public Schools for several years. He helped secure funding for the new system, working with other local schools, including Trinity and Bergan, to strengthen the application.
“The schools in Fremont received $500,000 and are required to provide a 25% match, bringing the total investment to well over $600,000 awarded to support safety enhancements across Fremont schools,” Kavan said.
Additional updates are still being implemented across the district.

This article does a good job explaining the new safety updates being added to Fremont Public Schools. The lead is clear and quickly tells the reader what the story is about, and the quotes froms Kevin Kavan adds good detail and credibility. I also like how the article explains why blue lights were chosen because it helps the reader understand the purpose of the system. Overall, this article is well organized, informative, and easy to follow.

Great article! Way to explain to the people the safety procedures that take place at our school. Also nice that you interviewed Mr. Kavan to get a staff perspective.

see I believe this is a great idea but with the amount of false alarms do you think students and staff will stop taking it seriously and what happens if it fails in the case of a actual emergency

In my opinion it’s good that the school wants to keep the students and staff safe with the new system but their has been many incidents were it accidently went off making kids panic because their was no warning of this happening and its been happening often and I feel like this will make the students not take it seriously anymore because they might think it accidently went off again and this won’t help to keep the students and staff safe and I also feel like they are very quiet because what if someone has a very loud class and whenever it goes off they won’t be able to here it behind all the noise and I feel like they should find a better way to communicate with those who are having their class outside.

What I have seen and what happened, the alarms have been going off for no apparent reason. Last week on thursday we had a bomb threat, and during 4th block the “New system” went off. This caused a lot of stress and worry in classrooms, students were already stressed as it was from the bomb threat. The lockdown stressed them out even more, from what I heard it was false alarm. It happened three times already ever since the 17 of april, these alarms had been going off. I say this from a students point of view, kids we’re texting their parents on Friday, freaking out.
