High school students take part in many activities inside and outside of school. From music to sports, there is something for everyone, but not all activities receive the same recognition. Students have different opinions on what counts as a sport versus a “hobby.” While many see bowling as just a fun activity, members of the bowling team put in the same amount of effort and time as any other student-athlete.
The girls bowling team worked hard this past year and placed first in many of their competitions.

For many people, common sports include football, baseball, soccer and basketball. Bowling is not usually placed in the same category. Many sports involve physical contact and require intense training and exertion. Senior Kailynn Valentine shared her perspective.
“I totally get why it’s not recognized as a sport,” Valentine said. “It’s boring, and people see it as less difficult than baseball or football, but there are so many things that go into it. I feel like it does need a little more recognition.”
Although bowling may not require as much physical exertion, bowlers train hard to improve their technique. That effort deserves recognition.
Bowling is also more individual than many other sports. While teammates support each other, in the end, it is the bowler and the pins. In other sports, a mistake by one player can be supported by the team. In bowling, each athlete performs alone. If a bowler makes a mistake, the team cannot make up for it in the same way. Individual practice is essential to building a strong team.
Even though only one person competes at a time, teammates are always there to support one another. They put in the work to stay focused and prepare for competition. Their effort is not wasted, as shown by their accomplishments.
After winning districts, the girls bowling team advanced to state. Hours of hard work led them to the final match, which was broadcast live. Despite nerves, the team gave their full effort in the final game of the season. The Fremont High School girls bowling team finished as state runner-up. Although they did not take first place, they showed dedication and made the season a memorable one.
