After about eight albums, 57 singles and other compilations, singer-songwriter Jake Scott introduced his new podcast, “Biggest Fan Podcast.” Co-directing with his wife, Rachel Scott, they have completed four episodes thus far.
As someone who has loved Jake Scott’s music since before the COVID-19 pandemic, I was very intrigued when he announced the “Biggest Fan Podcast.” I don’t normally listen to podcasts because I never have time in between responsibilities. I have found time to listen to this one, though.
Starting with Episode 1, Jake and Rachel express how they’ve wanted to start a podcast for the last year. After debating upon a theme, they decided to discuss their passions: diving in headfirst for better or for worse.
“Our passions aren’t there for nothing, it’s about refining them,” Rachel said. “We love talking about what we are passionate about together.”
After discussing what they want the podcast to look like, they go into their love story. Throughout the episode, they talk about how they met, their journey together and how they came to be where they are — together.
After touching on their life together, they chose to share their individual passions. Episode 2 is an episode purely about Jake and his journey to music production.
I already had some knowledge of how Jake came into songwriting, but it was interesting to hear the whole story. It was inspiring as he talked about his passion for songwriting and the road he took to where he is now.
I especially enjoyed when he started talking about the process of writing his first extended play as a solo artist: “Of Life and Love and Longing.”
This discussion cascades into Episode 3. Released in 2013, “Of Life and Love and Longing” made it to the top four on the Heatseekers charts.
Making connections, others saw that Jake could make something from songwriting. Collaborating with another artist, he was able to learn more about the craft, developing the skills he would use to open more doors within the music industry.
After a while, he felt as if he lost his way from the dream he had in 2019. In 2020, he focused on shifting perspective and discovering who he wanted to be as an artist.
“I will get a nugget of an idea,” Jake said, “and then I will sprint in that direction until I hit a brick wall.”
Reframing his mindset, he forced himself to slow down — not stop pursuing his dream, just slow down. After releasing his first album in 2023, it didn’t feel life-changing to him, his expectations and insecurities shadowing his success, making it feel like a failure.
“Success and failure is the worst barometer to do anything because you will never do anything,” Rachel said. “You’re going to have successes and failures … you will also have successes again … so throw that barometer out and have the new barometer of, this is in my heart and this is a day-to-day thing for every human. But I’m going to pursue this because it’s in me and I’m going to honor what God put in my heart and what I love to do.”
Jake continued this idea:
“If your worth isn’t secured on the front end, then yeah, like, this is going to kill. So you have to find it outside of this thing so that this thing has a chance to be pure.”
Having been consumed by passion, he found a way to grow in a way that does not hinder the joy that comes with it.
A big part of his life that Jake found joy in outside of music is his kids.
In Episode 4, Jake and Rachel announced Rachel’s pregnancy with their third child. In this episode, Jake and Rachel express their shared excitement, along with stories of their other two children, Ruby and Shepherd.
Using this podcast, Jake and Rachel Scott are able to share their passions and things they are big fans of. Exchanging stories, they talk about the highs and lows of reaching goals and making their dreams a reality.
