Since premiering in January 2025, the medical drama “The Pitt” has captured viewers with its high-stress emergency room setting and familiar faces from television’s past.
This show has quickly gathered a strong fan base, garnering over 10 million viewers every Thursday at 9:00 p.m. ET when the episodes air on HBO.
Taking place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, “The Pitt” follows stressed doctors, nurses and interns alike throughout their shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s emergency room.
Unlike more drama-centered medical shows, “The Pitt” focuses on making itself as accurate as possible. Honing in on real-life medical procedures and enlisting the help and advice of doctors, this show draws viewers into the world of emergency medicine.
Aside from the plot, the iconic cast doesn’t hurt the weekly views as the show goes on. Noah Wyle, a previous actor on the well-renowned hospital drama “ER,” continues his doctor reputation with his character Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the main character on “The Pitt.”
Katherine LaNasa plays Dana Evans, the charge nurse for the emergency room. Quick-witted with a no-nonsense attitude, Dana easily brought in fans excited to view her story’s continuation after a depressing Season 1 departure.
Dennis Whitaker, played by Gerran Howell, caught the attention of many fans for his kicked-dog sort of look. A farm boy from Broken Bow, Nebraska, Whitaker had me captivated with his scarily realistic performance of nervousness and awkward encounters with everyone else on the show. His written-in bad luck and sensitive demeanor have him in much trouble and messy situations throughout the first season. However, his character development is a satisfying watch as he takes on a more confident version of himself in Season 2.
Dr. Melissa “Mel” King (Taylor Dearden) is noticed for her performance, specifically her representation of neurodivergent people in the medical field. While not diagnosed on screen, writers of the show have decided to show this character in a very respectful way, which doesn’t often happen with neurodivergent characters in media. From using words in their most literal sense to how she interacts with other characters, even her sensitivity to harsh lighting, Dr. King has comforted fans with her unique, yet healthy, portrayal of neurodivergency in doctors.
It’s safe to say that medical shows have been steadily growing in popularity in past decades, with other shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Chicago Med” and “Scrubs” consistently being viewer favorites. As “The Pitt” carries on, there are high hopes and regard for the future of the show.
The Season 2 finale of “The Pitt” (Episode 15, “9:00 p.m.”) premiered April 16, 2026, on HBO Max, where viewers can binge both Season 1 and Season 2.
