With an impressive season full of victories and records, the Fremont High School Lady Tigers volleyball team now has their sights set on the state tournament. After a series of dominant performances, including a milestone 20th win, the team is ready to take on Elkhorn South as they pursue a state title under the leadership of their new head coach, Susan Wewel.
The team’s success is no accident—they’ve been training diligently, even outside of the official season.
“The volleyball athletes have done a remarkable job of preparing to win by dedicating themselves to the off-season open gyms, summer leagues, and strength and conditioning programs,” said new head coach Susan Wewel.
Wewel is a seasoned coach who began her career in 1975 at Bergan. She later coached for two years at Calhoun before returning to Fremont, where she led teams at Midland University. This season, she joined FHS to coach the Lady Tigers.
Under Wewel’s leadership, the team is achieving new milestones. One of the season’s biggest accomplishments was reaching 20 wins, a feat they achieved in a decisive victory over Lincoln East. Dominating the court, the Lady Tigers notched impressive stats in that game.
The team’s standout players included senior Mattie Dalton, who recorded 31 kills and nine blocks—eight solo and one assisted. Kate Denker added 46 assists, helping drive the Tigers to victory.
“Reaching the 20-win mark is a huge feat for any team that plays sports,” Wewel said. “The Lady Tigers volleyball athletes have done a remarkable job.”
Beyond this impressive milestone, the Lady Tigers have qualified for the NSAA state tournament for the first time in three years, marking another significant achievement.
As the season progresses, the team continues to grow stronger both physically and mentally. The coaching staff fosters a supportive environment where all players feel valued, whether they are varsity seniors or freshman newcomers. Wewel and her staff are committed to building a culture of inclusivity and respect, creating a close-knit team atmosphere.
And the Lady Tigers aren’t stopping here—they are focused on improving every day.
“The minute you stop thinking your team knows everything is when you start to fail,” Wewel said, acknowledging that the team has more work and success ahead. “There are so many things that need to be accomplished each and every day in practice and throughout the season.”
Tiger Nation has witnessed some incredible performances from this team. Now, all that’s left is to wish them luck as they face Elkhorn South in the state tournament.
