Do the intentions of “dating to marry” disappear when romance begins to fade, or when the pull of self-discovery calls despite a long-term relationship? Lead singer of the band The Marías discusses both in a recent interview on the “Zach Sang Show,” following the release of their new album, “Submarine.”
Zardoya and Josh Conway met in 2016 at an event in Los Angeles. Conway was hooked by the uniqueness of Zardoya’s voice. After writing a couple of songs together, they eventually formed a band now known as The Marías. The group released their first album, “Cinema,” in 2022. Shortly after, the two broke up — and did what musicians do best: expressed it through song. Their newest album, “Submarine,” was released soon after.
In a recent interview that went viral for its heavy subjects, Zardoya opened up about her perspective on love and relationships. She spoke about her seven-year relationship with Josh Conway, the band’s drummer and composer. Zardoya mentioned that she had grown tired of going from one relationship to another since she was 15, but ultimately, settling down with one person wasn’t her preference.
She was asked about the meaning behind one of the band’s well-known songs, “Sienna.” Often described as one of their most heartbreaking tracks, it captures a raw and honest moment as they wrote and reflected on their past together. Zardoya explained that “Sienna” represents a little girl who might have carried qualities from both partners — “an unborn child that will never be because the relationship ended,” she said.

Host Zach Sang asked Zardoya when or how she noticed the romance in the relationship was coming to an end. She couldn’t give a clear answer — almost as if she was asking herself that question, too.
Her reason for ending the relationship stunned many. Zardoya said she wanted to “discover who I am outside of the dynamic of being in a relationship and a band.” That was why she chose to remain single after seven years with Conway. Despite their breakup, the two remain friends and continue to write songs together because of their central roles in the band.
Although the romance has ended, the heartbreak lingers as they continue to write and release songs that reflect their breakup — a true love story that “would’ve been cute” (a lyric from “Sienna”).
