Do the intentions of ‘dating to marry’ disappear when the romance begins to fade away, or when the desire for self-discovery despite a long-term relationship is calling? Lead singer of the band “The Marias” discusses both in a recent interview on the Zach Sang Show, after the release of their new album
Zardoya and Josh Conway had met back in 2016 at an event in Los Angeles. Conway was hooked by the talent of Zardoya’s unique voice. After writing a couple songs together, they eventually formed a band, which is known to be The Marias. Zardoya and the band released their first album, titled Cinema, in 2022. Following shortly after, the two break up and do what musicians do best: express it through song. Submarine, the title of their newest album, was released.
Recently, in an interview that went viral due to the heavy subjects discussed, Zardoya opened up about her perspective on love and relationships. During this interview, she opens up about her previous seven-year relationship with Josh Conway, who plays the role of a drummer and composer. Zardoya mentions how she was tired of going from one relationship to another since she was fifteen years old, yet settling for one person after all wasn’t her preference.
When interviewed, Zardoya is asked questions about the meanings behind one of her famous songs, Sienna. Said to be one of the “most heartbreaking songs” they released, they shared a raw and honest moment writing and reminiscing over what used to be of the two’s past. She shares who ‘Sienna’ was, or could’ve been. A little girl who would’ve carried qualities from each partner but was “an unborn child that will never be because the relationship ended,” Zardoya said.

Host Zach Sang asks Zaradoya when or how she noticed the romance in the relationship was coming to an end, to which she couldn’t respond. Although being asked a very straightforward question, the response wasn’t very distinguishable, as if she was asking herself that question as well.
Her stance on why she wanted to end the relationship stunned many. Zardoya mentions wanting to “discover who I am outside of the dynamic of being a relationship and band,” which is why she chose to remain single after her seven-year relationship. With the knowledge of sharing such a long-term relationship, you’d think the heartbreak would be the end of their contact, but Zardoya shares that they continue to be friends and write songs together due to their big roles in their band.
Although the romance seemed to have left the picture, the heartbreak seems to follow them as they continue to write and release songs that highlight their breakup, a true love story that “would’ve been cute.” (lyric from Sienna).
