Deena Bignell, a former math teacher at Fremont High School, has returned to the school after a one-year absence. She recently discussed her reasons for leaving and coming back.
Bignell explained her decision to leave Fremont and return after only one year away.
“I have always taught at Fremont since I graduated and wanted an opportunity to teach at a different-sized school to see if it could help me grow as a teacher,” Bignell said.
Bignell also shared why she chose to pursue a career in teaching mathematics.
“I always enjoyed doing math in school,” Bignell said. “During my first year of college, I tutored many of my classmates and realized teaching math was what I wanted to do.”
Bignell spoke about the unique experience of working at the same school as her daughter.
“I really like seeing her every day and getting that extra time,” Bignell said. “However, I hope people recognize that we are two different people.”
Ashley Ortmeier, a teacher who co-teaches with Bignell, was asked about their collaboration and Bignell’s teaching abilities.
“Yes, I think she is a great teacher,” Ortmeier said. “She does a great job keeping the students on task and ensuring they complete their work.”
Bignell’s return to Fremont reflects both her professional growth as an educator and her desire to maintain strong connections to her family and the community.
