Prom, a yearly milestone for high school students, awaits as spring blossoms. This prominent occasion is frequently accompanied by the appeal of glitzy clothes, the newest music and priceless memories. However, beneath the glittering facade is a complicated mix of pressures and stressors that can make the night difficult for teens.
The teaching staff nominated five girls and five boys; Haylee Bates, Zoey Smallwood, Alexis Frank, Rachel Grenier, Sydney Glause, Mikey Saxton, Beau Shanahan, Caleb Kirby, Wes Pleskac, and Nathan Jones. The stress of sitting in the auditorium nervously waiting to see who will get picked is top-notch.
While the prom court sat in the auditorium waiting to see who would be crowned, senior Zoey Smallwood felt nervous with anticipation.
“I think everyone was really anxious to see who would be chosen,” Smallwood said. “I just thought to myself that they are all so deserving of it.”
Seniors Sydney Glause and Mikey Saxton were crowned the queen and king for prom 2024. Prom king Mikey Saxton felt planning for prom was stressful.
“The biggest stressor when it comes to prom is for sure trying to plan everything and make sure everything goes smoothly,” Saxton said.
Choosing the ideal outfit or suit, finding a date, and planning extravagant prom proposals. Some find that financial limitations can also increase stress because they may add quickly when it comes to the price of tickets, clothing, transportation, and other expenses.
Although prom is primarily an event for students, teachers put a great deal of time into making this night magical for the students. “I got onto this committee about 14 years ago when a math teacher retired,” Becky Tighe said. “We started preparing right before Christmas break.”
While students stressed about prom and post-prom activities, school faculty and staff focused on school safety as a priority. The administration took precautionary steps to ensure student safety.
“We contact security guards from Single 88 to provide security at prom,” Kody Christensen said.
Despite what many consider to be a stressful or exciting occasion, some students feel prom was a hit.
“Even though there was a lot of preparation I had to do, it all paid off because I had a great night with friends,” junior Jamie Morehouse said. “I am excited for next year’s prom.”
